Class D Substances, Proceed with Caution!

Many governments including the United States' Federal and State governments regulate substances, i.e. drugs. Drugs are classified by class or schedule. Each classifying or scheduling schema has a particular end in mind. An end might be to curb drug abuse. An end might be to restrict and control the use of particularly dangerous and risky drugs that are, however, practical and useful as a medicine. Class D substances are typically illicit drugs that are, however, more common or carry less of a social stigma.

Class D substances include marijuana for example. Marijuana in many states of the U.S., is legal for medicinal purposes. The drug has purported uses in treatments of ailments and diseases ranging in severity from high anxiety, to glaucoma, to cancer. Quite expectedly, the scheduling and classifying of drugs is controversial. The schedules and classes of drugs tend to adjust to the cultural acceptances and thresholds of the time. For instance, today, there is a grassroots movement for marijuana to be legalized and regulated at the Federal level. Proponents call for the end of marijuana prohibition. Others take it a step farther and call for the end of prohibition on all so called recreational drugs.

For instance, Coca Cola used to contain cocaine, and cocaine at one point-in smaller circles and while it was less known for its detrimental effects taken in higher quantities-was socially acceptable to use as a tool for a sudden burst of energy, much like coffee's used (or abused) today. Today cocaine is a highly controlled and regulated drug. Just a few companies in the United States are licensed and approved by the government to process cocaine for use by the Coca Cola company and pharmaceutical companies. Marijuana used to be encouraged by the government to produce for its variation called hemp, a durable material. Today, marijuana is typically graded a Class D Substance.

Some sociologists use associations to the U.S. President as a way to help to define the acceptances of particular drugs of particular eras and decades. The idea is, here, that if the country voted for this person into office, and this person had this certain drug somewhere in his background, then the country must be accepting, to an extent, of the drug. For almost the past 20 years of U.S. Presidencies, illicit drug use has been a common shadowy item in each of the men's background: Bill Clinton (marijuana), George W. Bush (cocaine), and Barack Obama (marijuana and cocaine). It's not Because of this that marijuana is seeing higher legalization these days; the Presidential backgrounds are merely an indicator. Regarding the legal ramifications and consequences to using or trafficking drugs placed on a particular schedule, you should consult your State for specific laws, as well as Federal statutes.
